18 March 2009 - Work gets underway on new multi million pound NHS centre in the heart of Hastings

Work is underway on the eagerly awaited NHS Primary Care Centre at Station Plaza in Hastings, which is due to open next year.

Contracts with Sussex Coast College, Hastings, who are developing the site next to Hastings Railway Station, and building firm Laing O’Rourke were signed last week, allowing work on the new £16 million facility to begin.

The Station Plaza Primary Care Centre will offer:

• space for 10 GPs, with 5 existing practices moving into the new state of the art building from their current premises in central Hastings.
• a walk-in centre, staffed by two local GPs as well as practice nurses, open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week, with the service available to anyone who wishes to use it, regardless of whether they live locally or are registered as a patient
• a Sexual Health Clinic which will move from its current home at Ore Clinic in Hastings to a more central location with excellent public transport links.
• a wide range of other services including, podiatry, physiotherapy, and mental health services for adults, children and young people.

The Station Plaza Primary Care Centre is part of an overall effort by NHS Hastings and Rother to offer local people as much choice and flexibility as possible when they want to see their GP, or get treatment from other primary care services.

Mike Wood, Chief Executive of NHS Hastings and Rother says:

“It is fantastic news that building work has begun on the Station Plaza Primary Care Centre.

We are all counting the days until the new facility is ready to open next year.

It will allow us to offer local people a wider range of services in a state of the art, modern centre which is right in the heart of Hastings.”
