NHS health fair at Asda The Crumbles reveals Eastbourne folk pro-active on health

Staff at the NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald health fair at Asda supermarket, The Crumbles, Eastbourne, on 24 September were delighted at the number of local people looking for information on staying healthy.

Over 180 people had their blood pressure checked and hundreds of leaflets were taken away, covering subjects such as giving up smoking, sensible drinking, diet, exercise, weight, stroke, cancer and sexual health.

Among those having their blood pressure checked was the PCT’s Chairman John Barnes who said,

“It is very important for local people to see staff face to face, not just when they aren’t well, so they can see how much is being done to keep people well and promote good health in our area.”

There were over 300 enquiries about general NHS services and specific subjects like maternity services, how to comment on services, finding an NHS dentist and about the falls prevention service; a team who work directly with people to help them keep mobile.

Further health fairs are planned for Spring 2010.
