16 February 2009 - Next step for new Medical Centre at Sovereign Harbour

Planning permission could soon be secured for a brand new doctor’s surgery serving people living around Sovereign Harbour.

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald has been working with local GP Dr Idango Adoki, on a detailed planning application which has now been submitted to Eastbourne Borough Council.

Dr Adoki, who runs Harbour Medical Practice, wants to build a larger purpose built facility to replace the converted home which the surgery is currently housed in.

However, the project has been delayed by difficulties in finding a suitable available site and only recently has the right site been identified.

With support from NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald Dr Adoki has now completed a planning application for the new building which will be considered by Eastbourne Borough Council in the near future.

A decision is expected to be made by the council’s planning committee in the spring.

John Barnes, the Chairman of NHS ESDW, said:

“Sovereign Harbour is an area with a fast growing population.

It is vital that a new, state of the art medical building is in place as soon as possible to serve the needs of local people.

We want to do all we can to help Dr Adoki make his plans a reality.”

Dr Adoki from Harbour Medical Practice said:

“I am delighted that the latest phase in the project is underway. It has taken longer than anyone would have liked to get this far, but I am confident that with expert advice and support from NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald we will get planning permission for our new surgery building.

I hope that all interested parties will work together to make this much needed facility for the residents of Sovereign Harbour a reality.”

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald has ambitious plans to further develop primary care services locally.

Details have just been announced about a new Walk In Centre in central Eastbourne, offering access to help and advice from GPs and practice nurses, seven days a week, from 8am to 8pm.

We have already supported the construction of a new GP surgery at Stone Cross in Eastbourne and we have plans for further new premises at, Ringmer, Uckfield, Hartfield and Peacehaven.

We have also worked to extend a number of GP surgery buildings, including Saxonbury House Surgery and Beacon Surgery in Crowborough.
