16 February 2009 - Local GP consortium to run new Walk In Centre in Eastbourne

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald is pleased to announce that a contractor has been successfully appointed to run the Walk In Centre in Eastbourne.

The new facility, which will be located in the heart of Eastbourne and is due to open in the late summer, will offer a ‘walk-in’ service operating 7 days a week, from 8am to 8pm.

This will allow anyone who wants to see a GP or practice nurse to get help and advice on health issues at a time and place convenient for them.

Anybody, whether they live locally or are simply visiting Eastbourne or working in the town, will be able to use the new Walk In Centre.

Local people will also be able to register with the new centre as patients, as with any other GP practice.

Following a rigorous tendering process, South East Health (SEH), which is a not for profit organisation with over 500 GP members, has been appointed to run the new Walk In Centre.

SEH will be working with the Lighthouse GP Practice in Eastbourne, who have surgeries at College Road and at the Ian Gow Memorial Health Centre in Langney, to develop the Walk In Centre.

Mike Wood, Chief Executive of NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald says:

“This is really exciting news. The new Walk In Centre will give people more flexibility and choice when they want to see someone for help and advice on health issues.

They will be able to see a GP or practice nurse at a time and place that is more convenient to them.

This is all part of an overall effort by NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald to offer local people a better choice and service when it comes to primary care.”

Ron Owttrim, Chief Executive of South East Health, adds:

“We are delighted to have been awarded the contract to run the new Walk In Centre in Eastbourne and we are looking forward to getting the new facility ready for opening in the late summer.

We already provide the out of hours GP service for local people and will be working hard to offer a flexible and convenient service at the Walk In Centre that provides the care and advice that people need.

We are pleased to be working with local GPs to offer a wider choice and high standard of services to people in Eastbourne.”

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald has ambitious plans to further develop primary care services locally.

We have already supported the construction of a new GP surgery at Stone Cross in Eastbourne and we have plans for further new premises at Sovereign Harbour, Ringmer, Uckfield, Hartfield and Peacehaven.

We have also worked to extend a number of GP surgery buildings, including Saxonbury House Surgery and Beacon Surgery in Crowborough.
