Find out how to avoid stroke - Arndale Centre, 2nd Feb

An expert NHS team are coming to the centre of Eastbourne next month to highlight how people how can prevent strokes, including reducing the amount of salt they consume.

The Community Stroke Rehabilitation team work with people who have suffered a stroke to help them recover and have as good a quality of life as possible.

The team will be at the Arndale Shopping Centre on Tuesday 2nd February 2010 from 10.30am to 2.30pm to answer questions and hand out information.

Dietitian Jill Gurton says,

"Eating too much salt can raise your risk of having a stroke.

There is a lot of strong evidence linking overuse of salt with high blood pressure, which is the main cause of strokes, as well as a cause of heart attacks."

We will be telling people we meet at the Arndale Centre about the salt content of many common foods, and you will be surprised at the high levels of salt in some of them"

A dietitian and a nurse will be available on the day offering advice on how people can reduce the amount of salt in their diets.

They will also be offering free blood pressure checks.

Salt recommendations:

On average, people in the UK eat about 9.5g salt (about 3.7g sodium) a day. This may not sound like much, but to reduce the risk of disease, adults should not be eating more than 6g salt (2.5g sodium) a day.
