A spa day for women in Eastbourne from black, asian and other minority ethnic backgrounds is being held, all with the aim of helping to promote health and well being in communities who are less likely to access health services.
Taster sessions in Tai Chi, Henna art and manicures will be on offer.
It will be an opportunity for women who come from minority ethnic backgrounds such as South Asian, African, Caribbean, Chinese, Irish Travellers, and other minority ethnic groups to get help, advice and support on a range of health issues, including maintaining good mental health.
The new Eastbourne Health Trainers team will be on hand to offer advice on leading a healthier lifestyle and there will be the chance to make appointments for breast and cervical screening.
The event, at the Willingdon Trees Community Centre (see below for full address) from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday 6 November 2010, is aimed at encouraging women to come along, meet others and develop wider social networks.
It is being funded by Eastbourne Mosque, working together with NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald, the Women's Only Swim Group, East Sussex Race Equality in Mental Health Team and Vandu Language Services.
Jenny Greenfield, a Nurse Consultant with NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald, has helped to organise the spa day. She says:
"We have designed the day to attract as many women as possible.
Getting out of the house, meeting other people, making friends and enjoying yourself are all vital to maintaining good mental health and helping you to cope with the stresses and strains of life.
We want people to come along, enjoy themselves and go away with advice, information and support to help them improve their health and well being."
Interpreters will be available on the day and women are asked not to bring their children.
