A groundbreaking ceremony is taking place (10am, Weds 21 July) to mark the start of work on a major new health centre in Peacehaven.
Over £4 million is being invested in the new facility on Meridian Way.
It will house the Meridian Surgery GP practice, as well as a range of community services such as physiotherapy, podiatry and dermatology.
There will also be a special suite for minor operations, whilst other options, such as the inclusion of a healthy living centre, are also being explored.
All that will mean that local people can have many of their needs met close to home rather than having to travel further afield, to a major hospital, for example.
Dr Ron White, a partner at the Meridian Surgery, says:
"The fact that building work is starting on the new health centre is really exciting news.
We cannot wait until it is finished in October 2011 and we can move in and start treating patients in a modern, state of the art facility which offers a range of services close to where people live."
Murray King, Head of Primary Care for NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald, adds:
"We have been working very closely with the Meridian Surgery on this project, which, at a total of 1400 square metres of new building, is the biggest GP surgery development in the whole of East Sussex.
This new facility will allow the NHS to give the patients care and treatment they need in an excellent environment."
The new health centre is being built on the site of the original Meridian GP practice on Meridian Way.
