Uckfield Hospital's radiology department has just received a new, top of the range ultrasound machine, thanks to the hospital's League of Friends.
The scanner, which cost £75,000, will be used to check many different parts of the body including the abdomen, liver, arteries and veins, pancreas, thyroid and salivary glands, kidneys and bladder. It can also be used for gynaecology and testicular scanning.
Bernard Trew, Chairman of the League of Friends says,
“It is tremendous that the people of Uckfield and surrounding areas will be able to make use of this imaging equipment, which makes incredibly detailed images, using sound-wave technology."
"The scans are impressive, it is even possible to see blood
flowing to and from various organs. Thanks to Clare Parter, Ultrasound Manager for allowing us to see how well her veins are working!"
The scanner has been placed in a new spacious room which has been fitted out at a cost of £5,000, also courtesy of the hospital's League of Friends.
The machine is connected to a digital picture archiving system so hospital clinicians and radiologists can review images immediately wherever they are, which is useful if a quick second opinion is needed.
Wheelchair access is easier, as is bed access for any patients who need to be taken along to the department from inpatient care.
The service is also available for outpatients, as referred by their GP.
