What we do

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald is the working name of East Sussex Downs and Weald Primary Care Trust (PCT).

If you live in the Eastbourne borough, or Lewes or Wealden districts,  or have a GP in the area, the we are responsible for the health services you need.

These include services provided by your GP, dentist, optician and pharmacist at health centres and clinics, in local hospitals or in your home.

We also purchase other NHS services you need, including hospital treatment (either at the District General Hospital in Eastbourne, the Kent and Sussex Hospital in Tunbridge Wells, the various hospitals in Brighton or further afield) and mental health and learning disability services.

We also make contributions to services from voluntary organisations such as Age Concern and Care for the Carers.

In addition, we fund other services, including district nurses, health visitors, school nurses and other professionals (such as physiotherapists) who provide services in patients' homes, community clinics, schools and other venues.

We are also responsible for sexual health, child protection and health promotion services.

NHS East Sussex Downs and Weald works closely with the neighbouring PCT, NHS Hastings and Rother.

The two organisations share one Chief Executive and Executive Directors.

Many of the corporate functions, such as finance or communications, of the PCTs work across both organisations.
